Guwahati: In an effort to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation will soon begin redeveloping the streets of Paltan Bazar .GMC, with the Assam Urban Knowledge Hub under the Directorate of Town & Country Planning, is preparing to execute the Paltan Bazaar Street Redevelopment Project after a tactical urbanism pilot in the area.Officials said work is likely to begin in the coming months. The Rs 15.5-crore project, covering about 1.2 km, will be taken up under the Centre’s Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI).“The project will cover the existing one-way loop from GS Road to the approach road leading towards Nepali Mandir and Paltan Bazar , and focus on pedestrian safety, drainage design, greening and utility planning,” an official from the T&CP said.The official said the redesign follows the National Urban Transport Policy, 2006, and its “complete streets” approach. “In practical terms, this means reworking the full right of way (RoW) to create dedicated pedestrian space, consistent lanes for smoother vehicle flow, functional junctions, clearly defined on-street parking, better placement and integration of public transport, improved vending-space management, and a greener transit corridor,” the official also said.Officials said rising private vehicle use, street vending and unorganised parking have reduced Paltan Bazar’s road capacity and slowed movement. The project seeks to reorganise street space to address congestion.The plan also proposes integrating ASTC’s existing multi-level car park to promote off-street parking and free up road space.
