Guwahati: Severe waterlogging and a landslide paralysed traffic at Jorabat on Monday, stranding hundreds of passengers for hours.The Jorabat stretch of NH-27, Guwahati’s main link to upper Assam and Meghalaya, witnessed one of its worst traffic snarls in recent months after incessant rain inundated the road, leaving parts of it covered in sludge.The regional office of the National Highways Authority of India said on X that continuous rain on Sunday inconvenienced highway users and advised commuters to drive cautiously. It said restoration teams were at the site, carrying out water drainage and mud clearance work.Passengers stranded on the stretch said traffic barely moved for hours. Many were headed to Tezpur, Morigaon, Doboka and Golaghat, with some claiming they were waiting for more than 11 hours.Mintu Rabha, who was travelling to Hojai, said, “I arrived in the city last Monday for some work, and was supposed to leave on Sunday. However, due to heavy rain, my journey was delayed. I have been waiting for almost 11 hours to catch a bus.”Mofizul Ahmed, a private college student travelling to Morigaon, said, “I don’t know when I’ll reach home at this pace. There’s such a huge queue of vehicles ahead, and we have hardly moved.”Several vendors in Jorabat said they could not open their shops as sludge and muck made the area inaccessible.Heavy rain also waterlogged Beltola, Chandmari and Hatigaon. Videos from Beharbari showed patients being moved on tractors as roads became impassable.
