T’puram: The state human rights commission has sought an urgent report from the city corporation over the alleged failure to address the growing stray dog menace on the premises of Govt Medical College.Commission chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas directed the corporation secretary to submit the report by Sept 14, acting on a complaint filed by public activist P K Raju. The complaint alleged that patients, bystanders and hospital employees are under constant threat from stray dogs roaming at the Medical College campus.Raju alleged that the civic body had failed to take effective measures despite the seriousness of the situation, putting the safety of thousands of people visiting the hospital at risk.The development comes amid renewed scrutiny of stray dog management in the state. The high court recently directed the state govt to implead all local bodies in a suo motu case concerning the growing stray dog menace.The corporation operates an animal birth control (ABC) programme involving sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination. Its monitoring portal currently lists 5,240 dogs sterilised and 4,980 vaccinated, while 1,320 complaints have been resolved. The corporation had also upgraded its Vandithadam ABC centre in April, doubling its capacity to accommodate 100 dogs at a time.
