Patna: In line with CM’s directions for the holistic development of Kesariya Stupa, the state govt has initiated plans to transform the historic Buddhist site into a major eco-tourism destination while ensuring its archaeological heritage remains protected.A high-level review meeting and site inspection were conducted on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Anand Kishor, additional chief secretary, environment, forest and climate change department, following the CM’s review meeting held on July 26. The meeting focused on the conservation of Kesariya Stupa—one of the tallest and most significant Buddhist stupas in the world—and the comprehensive development of the monument and its surrounding areas.During the discussions, the DM presented various options for land availability around the stupa to facilitate planned development activities. He also proposed the development of the nearby Sarotar Lake to create an integrated tourism circuit linking the lake with the historic monument.Officials of the ASI informed the meeting that no construction is permitted within 100 metres of the stupa’s boundary wall, while any construction between 100 and 200 metres must not exceed a height of seven metres, in accordance with heritage protection norms.Taking these restrictions into account, Kishor directed officials to avoid tall structures and instead focus on eco-friendly development. He instructed that eco-huts, extensive landscaping, green spaces and adequate vehicle parking facilities be included in the master plan.Sudhakar suggested developing a Zen Park, Children’s Park and Meditation Centre, while the Sub-Divisional Officer of Chakia proposed establishing a Vipassana Centre. The proposals received the approval of the ACS.The Forest Division Officer, Motihari, highlighted the vast eco-tourism potential of Sarotar Lake. Following the proposal, the ACS directed officials to prepare plans for boating facilities, a cafeteria, parks and other visitor amenities around the lake.
