Pune: The standing committee of civic body on Tuesday approved a flyover at Mundhwa chowk to ease traffic flow at the junction.The approval came after repeated demands from commuters, who have been spending significant time to cross the chowk.The Mundhwa junction (Mahatma Phule chowk) caters to the traffic coming from Kharadi bypass, Mundhwa, Keshavnagar and Tadigutta chowk. The PMC has, in the last six months, cleared significant encroachment from the chowk.The standing committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale said an agency has been finalised for construction of the facility and the work was expected to get over in two years after commencement. There was no requirement of land for the flyover’s work, hence the work was unlikely to face any hurdles. The PMC has planned to spend Rs. 126 crore for the flyover. The proposal waw tabled before the standing committee by the administration. A 1,080-meter long flyover will cater to the traffic between Kharadi and Mundhwa. A metro line has also been proposed on the stretch and the civic administration, while planning the flyover, has considered the metro alignment to avoid further complications.Meanwhile, the committee also approved construction of a pedestrian underground rail crossing at Kaleborate Nagar at a cost of Rs 5.37 crore. The PMC has proposed a flyover on the railway track in the same area, but the proposal was still to be finalised owing to various technical challenges.Meeting soon to discuss flyover projects: BhimaleStanding committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale said a joint meeting with Maha Metro will be held soon to discuss the flyover proposals. He said works of some flyovers were at advanced stages while many have been at proposed stages. The metro lines were coming at many locations where PMC has proposed flyovers. A meeting would be held to discuss the designing of metro and flyovers at all such stretches.
