Ghaziabad: A salesman at a Tanishq showroom in Raj Nagar District Centre (RDC) allegedly stole jewellery worth several lakhs from the store in the early hours of Friday. An FIR has been registered and teams have been formed to nab the accused, who was caught committing the theft on CCTV.The showroom’s owner, Rohit Arora, said his employees informed him around 8.50am on Friday that the shutter was open when they arrived at the store. He rushed to the spot and checked the CCTV footage, discovering the theft.Using the footage, cops identified Nitin Verma, one of the employees, as one of the two accused. CCTV footage shows Verma opening the shutter with a key around 7am, following which the duo targeted the high-end gold and diamond jewellery on the first floor, ignoring all other items in the three-storey building.“We are assessing the amount of theft yet as the audit team is checking the ornaments,” Arora said.ACP (Kavi Nagar) Suryabali Maurya said police were informed about the theft around 10am. Cops found that Verma had worked as a salesman at the store for the last month. He was hired following a police verification. Investigation revealed that the showroom’s key used to remain with the manager, Gautam Raj. Raj has been detained for questioning to determine how the key was stolen and whether Raj was involved. On Thursday night, after work, Verma threw a party with the other employees in attendance, where they had all been drinking. It is possible Verma stole the key from Raj during the party, cops said.An FIR has been registered against Verma and unknown persons under Section 306 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) of BNS at Kavi Nagar police station, and five teams have been formed to trace the accused.Police said the accused carried out the theft within a 25-minute window and only targeted the first floor, where they knew the gold, diamond and gem-studded jewellery was kept. “At the time of theft, security personnel were also absent and police are questioning them as well,” a senior police officer said.
