Nagpur: Residents of Ganesh Nagar under Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Hanuman Nagar zone have raised concerns over alleged illegal commercial activities, encroachments and public nuisance in the residential area, claiming that repeated complaints submitted to civic authorities have failed to bring any action. In a representation submitted to NMC commissioner and zonal authorities, residents alleged that illegal establishments, noise pollution, air pollution and crowding have disturbed the peace and safety of the locality. They have demanded immediate intervention from civic and police authorities while requesting confidentiality of complainants’ identities due to concerns over possible retaliation.Residents have alleged that a biryani centre is operating illegally on a residential plot, resulting in encroachment issues. They claimed that multiple complaints, RTI applications and appeals have been filed with the NMC and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), but no concrete action has been taken. They also alleged that an adjoining vacant plot has turned into a garbage dumping ground with overgrown vegetation, creating unhygienic conditions and increasing the risk of mosquito breeding. The residents have also raised objections against a beer shop, alleging that customers consume alcohol at the premises despite the shop being licensed only for retail sale. They claimed that crowding around the shop has created safety concerns for women and families residing in the area.Another establishment has been accused of causing public nuisance due to alleged hookah consumption, smoking and suspected encroachment of public space. Residents claimed that crowds gathering outside the establishment and cigarette smoke entering nearby homes have affected the residential environment.Regarding the bar, residents alleged violations related to noise and air pollution due to inadequate soundproofing and open areas being used for illegal activities. They also claimed that an unauthorised structure has been constructed at the rear of the premises. Zonal assistant commissioner Narendra Bawankar, speaking to TOI, said that they have made multiple visits to the spot and had even ordered that the encroachment on the footpath be removed. “The extension of the shop was removed; we also served notices to them,” he said. He added that he recently had a meeting with CP Vishwas Nagre Patil, and it was decided that the NMC and police would collaborate on such an operation to remove illegal operations. “We have all been asked to make schedules for eviction drives for next week, and we will collaborate with the cops and bring an end to the meetings,” he said.
