Ahmedabad: A day after nine people, including three minors, were killed in a blast at an illegal firecracker factory in Ramol, Ahmedabad police commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut on Sunday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT).Gahlaut told the SIT to submit a progress report within 10 days.The explosion occurred around 3.30pm on Saturday at New Gujarat Fire Works, operating behind the Rapid Action Force camp in Vastral village.The police commissioner directed the SIT to conduct a transparent probe into the blast and collect all physical, forensic, documentary, and digital evidence while maintaining the chain of custody.The SIT has been told to coordinate with the Forensic Sciences Laboratory and fire and labour departments, and experts on explosives.Ramol police have registered an FIR under sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to culpable homicide, endangerment of human life, and criminal conspiracy. The Explosive Substances Act and the Explosives Act have also been invoked.The SIT will function under ACP, Sector-II, Jaypal Singh. The team members are DCP (Zone-8) Mayur Patil, ACP (S Division) Y A Gohil, and Ramol police inspector P D Mori.Unauthorised unit razed, more factories under scannerAhmedabad: Less than 24 hours after the Ramol firecracker factory blast, the illegal structure was demolished on Sunday. The demolition was carried out by the landowner. Ahmedabad police, civic authorities, the fire department, and other agencies were present to ensure the exercise was completed safely.Authorities also launched inspections of other firecracker units operating in the area to verify if they possessed licences. Police said action would be taken against any unit found operating illegally or violating safety rules. The crackdown comes after the fatal explosion.
