Kanpur: The PMKVY 4.0 skilling programme on ‘Assistant Machinist – Iron and Steel’ commenced at the Imagineering Laboratory of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, with active participation from 4-i Lab, Central Workshop, and Tinkering Laboratory.Aligned with vision for Viksit Bharat, the initiative marks one of the first large-scale skill development programmes at IIT Kanpur, through which, students will receive state-of-the-art training and practical exposure to technologies related to precision manufacturing systems.The course was designed as an extensive 420-hour training programme, which will run for 70 days, with six hours of training each day. The institute plans to train approximately 360 students in phases, to develop a skilled workforce for advanced manufacturing industries.Skill development courses will be conducted in phases: Iron and Steel – Assistant Machinist, Robotics and Automation – COBOTS Engineer and Advanced Mechatronics Engineer. In the first phase, 40 candidates from Kanpur registered for Assistant Machinist – Iron and Steel course.The programme is being conducted with the support of IIT Kanpur director, Prof Manindra Agrawal, and dean of research and development, Tarun Gupta. The course is being coordinated by Bishakh Bhattacharya and Dr Amandeep Singh Oberoi, who are overseeing the academic and technical execution of the training programme.The programme offers hands-on training in additive and subtractive machining, along with traditional and advanced metal-cutting processes, ensuring trainees gain industry-relevant skills and practical experience. Through this training programme, the institute envisions creating a strong ecosystem for next-generation manufacturing and automation industries.
