Statewide data shows that out of the total number of colleges penalised, 39 govt-aided colleges are required to deposit around Rs 1.23 crore, while 79 self-financed colleges need to pay approximately Rs 1.60 crore.

Gurgaon: Several colleges across Haryana have been slapped with penalties for non-payment of dues they owe to the higher education department from the admission registration fees.

Across the state, 118 colleges – including six from Gurgaon – have been penalised by the department, with instructions issued to deposit pending amounts worth several lakhs within a stipulated deadline. The six colleges from Gurgaon need to pay over Rs 10 lakh. Officials said that all dues must be cleared through demand draft by April 13 for the 2025-26 academic session.

Statewide data shows that out of the total number of colleges penalised, 39 govt-aided colleges are required to deposit around Rs 1.23 crore, while 79 self-financed colleges need to pay approximately Rs 1.60 crore. “Colleges must deposit the penalty, failing which further action will be initiated,” the department said.

As per norms, private and aided colleges are required to transfer a fixed percentage of the collected fees to the higher education department. However, negligence in the centralised admission process is now proving costly for the colleges.

Among the penalised institutions in Gurgaon, DPG Degree College has been fined Rs 100, while Sector 32-based Four Academy of Management Education faces a penalty of Rs 56,300. Indian School of Hospitality in Sikohpur has been fined Rs 24,800, JK Business School Rs 71,500 and Suraj Degree College in Sector 75 Rs 1,31,950 under the self-financed category. In the govt-aided category, NB(G)SM College has been imposed the highest penalty of Rs 7,27,718.

“Failure to deposit the amount on time resulted in penalties and recovery orders,” a higher education department official said, adding that late fee penalties have been imposed on private and govt-aided colleges. Vice chairman of DPG Degree College Deepak Gehlot told TOI, “Most of our dues were cleared on time, but even a single pending student fee led to this fine.”

District-wise, Sonipat and Yamunanagar top the list among aided colleges with six each, followed by Ambala and Kurukshetra with four each. Kaithal and Panipat have three each, while Palwal, Rohtak, Rewari and Sirsa have two each. Bhiwani, Faridabad, Fatehabad, Gurgaon and Jind have one college each in this category.

In the self-financed segment, Mahendragarh leads with 18 colleges, followed by Hisar and Sirsa with seven each. Gurgaon, Karnal, Panipat, Rewari and Jind have five each, Sonipat has four, Bhiwani and Palwal have three each, Fatehabad and Kurukshetra have two each, while Ambala, Faridabad, Kaithal, Nuh, Rohtak and Yamunanagar have one college each on the list.
