Dibrugarh: Sivasagar DM Mridul Yadav has banned the storage and sale of degenerated molasses, locally known as “lalee gur,” across the district with immediate effect, citing its alleged misuse in the manufacture of spurious country liquor. The order was issued on Thursday under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, amid reports that the low-grade molasses, meant for cattle feed, was being diverted for illicit liquor production. In the order, the DM said urgent action was necessary. “The sale of degenerated molasses (Gur) generally called ‘Lalee’, which are to be used only for cattle feed, is being widely used for preparing country liquor at certain places in this district, leading to sale of spurious liquor affecting public health,” the order stated. It added that the situation could lead to “widespread disturbance of public health, peace and tranquility.”The order was passed ex-parte and will remain in force for 60 days from the date of issue.Under the directive, anyone seeking to buy degenerated molasses for cattle feed must obtain prior permission from the DM, ADM, or the veterinary department in Sivasagar.Violators will face prosecution under Section 223 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for disobeying an order issued by a public servant.Senior superintendent of police, Sivasagar, has been asked to enforce the order strictly. Officers-in-Charge of police stations including Sivasagar, Gaurisagar, Amguri, Haluwating, Demow, Nazira, Simaluguri, Namti, Bihubor, Geleky, Lakwa and Mathurapur have been directed to implement it.The administration’s action comes against the backdrop of repeated concerns in Assam over deaths and public anger linked to spurious liquor.
