Srinagar: Kashmir’s State Investigation Agency (SIA) has filed a 737-page charge sheet before a Special Court in Srinagar in connection with the 1990 abduction and killing of a nurse Sarla Bhat, who was a Kashmiri Pandit. Former chief of the banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Yasin Malik, has been named in the charge sheet.

The charge sheet has been submitted before the court of the Additional Sessions Judge, TADA/POTA and Special Judge designated under the NIA Act, Srinagar. Khurshid Ahmad Chalkoo, Abdul Hamid Sheikh, Mohammad Yousuf Sofi and Ghulam Mohammad Taploo have also been named as accused. Malik is currently in Tihar jail, Chalkoo is absconding while Sofi, Sheikh and Taploo have died.

Bhat was employed as a nurse at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and was killed on April 18, 1990. Her body was found in Malabagh area on the outskirts of Srinagar.
The investigation was transferred to the SIA by the Director General of J&K Police, on March 18, 2024, following which the agency carried out a detailed probe.

Advocate Adil Pandit, Malik’s lawyer said, “Nothing has been proven against Malik in this charge sheet and it is an attempt to grab headlines using his name”.
