T’puram: A rapporteur team appointed by State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas inspected various locations in Thiruvananthapuram corporation as part of an assessment of the city’s solid waste management system.The team, led by former chief secretary M M Vijayanand, visited several waste management facilities and areas, including Amayizhanjan canal, Rajaji Nagar, Thakaraparambu, Chenthitta-Valiyasala, Karamana-Kalady, Attipra-Kulathoor, Attipra-Valiyathura, Manacaud, Kalippankulam, Kudappanakunnu, Ulloor, Sasthamangalam and Kazhakkoottam.The team also inspected the market and slaughterhouse, Thekkanakkara canal, KSRTC facility at Enchakkal, the organic waste treatment facility at Kalladimukham, and inorganic waste processing facilities at Manacaud, Kalladimukham and Muttathara. Other locations visited include Vizhinjam Beach Road, Nanthancode-Kanakanagar, Palayam fish market, Thuruthumoola in Vattiyoorkavu, Chellamangalam and the Material Collection Facility at Elamkavil near Medical College.Scientist Dr R Ajaykumar Varma and waste management consultant N Jagajeevan led the inspections, while corporation health inspector Anilkumar provided technical assistance.The team assessed the functioning of various waste management projects and held discussions with officials responsible for waste management in the corporation. They also discussed measures to improve the effectiveness of solid waste disposal and management.The inspection was conducted over three days. The rapporteur team will submit its findings to SHRC. Based on the report, Justice Thomas will issue further directions to govt.
