Khagaria: Incessant rain in catchment areas and rising level of river Ganga in the last few days have inundated a number of villages near the embankments, besides posing inundation threat to a number of others in the riverine areas across Khagaria district.Water have started entering low-lying areas, damaging standing crops, including maize and bananas, over hundred acres of cultivable land.On Wednesday, at least 24 farmers of Jagriti Tola in Kabela panchayat under Parbata block had a narrow escape after a country boat, transporting them, capsized in a rivulet of Ganga river. All of the swam to safety, official sources said.Meanwhile, a video of a few students of Middle School, Janki Chak, under Parbatta block, plying a country boat in floodwater during lunch hour, went viral on social media. Khagaria district magistrate (DM) Navin Kumar has asked the district education officer to seek an explanation from the headmaster of the concerned school.The Khagaria DM, who visited different vulnerable points of the embankments recently, said the situation was fully under control. He has, however, asked the top officials of the district administration as well as water resources department to remain vigilant.“This is the plight of villagers that they face almost every year,” said Prabhashankar Singh, a marginal farmer of Rahimpur village on the outskirts of Khagaria town.
