Times News NetworkKanpur: Police have arrested seven people, including a lekhpal posted in Bilhaur and two women, after a mob allegedly attacked police during a blockade of Kanpur-Prayagraj highway over a woman’s death.Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said lekhpal Ambuj Kumar, Saurabh, labourers Lavkush and Kailash Kumar, mason Deepu Nishad, Gita and Shanti were arrested and sent to jail. Kailash is the deceased’s younger brother.Police registered a case against 23 named and 30 to 40 unidentified people on a complaint by Ahirwan police outpost in-charge Jayveer Singh, who was also injured in the stone-pelting. Charges include attempt to murder, rioting, obstructing a public road and preventing a govt employee from performing duty.Mala (32), a resident of Shekhpur village, had married Munna Nishad about eight years ago. They have two children, Rudra and Vaishnavi.Her maternal family said Mala was unwell on Saturday. Her cousin Shani took her for medication and dropped her at her in-laws’ house around 3 pm. About an hour later, Munna called him and said Mala had hanged herself. Police and a forensic team inspected the scene and sent the body for post-mortem examination.On Sunday evening, while Mala’s maternal family was taking her body home after the post-mortem, an argument arose with her in-laws. Alleging police inaction against them, the family placed the body on the highway and blocked traffic.Police tried to persuade the protesters to clear the road, but an argument followed and the crowd allegedly pelted stones.Inspector Chakeri police station Ajay Prakash Mishra, inspector Janardan Singh and Ahirwan outpost in-charge Rajveer Singh were injured and taken to Kanshi Ram Hospital.
