T’puram: A 68-year-old temporary security guard with the archaeology department was killed after a KSRTC bus ran over him at East Fort, as he was walking to attend an Onam celebration around 12.40pm on Friday.The deceased was Premkumar, who was posted at Sreepadam Palace, located on the northern side of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. He had got off a bus at East Fort and was walking along the roadside in front of Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple when the accident occurred.Police said the KSRTC bus, operated from Venjaramoodu depot, was leaving East Fort when it hit Premkumar. The impact knocked him onto the road, following which the front wheel of the bus ran over him.On noticing Premkumar trapped beneath the bus, pedestrians raised an alarm, prompting the driver to stop the vehicle. The driver then immediately reversed the bus to free Premkumar from beneath the tyre.

Premkumar was rushed to the general hospital. However, he died on the way to the hospital.Fort police registered a case against the KSRTC bus driver for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident, including how the bus hit the pedestrian while leaving East Fort.The body has been handed over to the relatives after the postmortem.Premkumar is survived by his wife, Shanthakumari; children Ramesh and Rajani; and in-laws Rajani and Raghu.
