Kolkata: Scottish Church College has been granted a No Objection Certificate (NoC) by Calcutta University (CU) to apply for autonomy status from the University Grants Commission (UGC). While the college had applied to the UGC for autonomous status in May, it simultaneously requested the necessary certificate from the university. Following this appeal, the university issued the NOC in June.College principal Madhumanjari Mandal said, “The university has extended all necessary cooperation regarding this matter. The only document yet to be submitted to the UGC is the fire safety certificate. That process is underway.”To receive the fire safety certificate, the 196-year-old institution must submit a proper building plan, which is currently being prepared. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) had recommended the college apply for autonomy during its 2022 visit. With autonomous status, the college plans to introduce several major courses, including sociology, statistics, and psychology, as well as expand its curriculum into artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. Scottish Church College has already established a second campus at the Ogilvie building, where it plans to host these new courses once autonomy is officially granted. The 114-year-old Loreto College has also applied for autonomy and is awaiting the approval from UGC.
