HYDERABAD: A Hyderabad-origin woman, Sandhya Reddy, was elected mayor of Strathfield Council in Sydney, Australia, on Tuesday. According to members of the migrant community, she is the first Indian-born migrant woman to serve as a mayor in Australia.Affectionately known as Sandy, Reddy began her journey with the State Emergency Service in 2014 and was elected to the Strathfield Council as an independent councillor in 2021. In 2023, she was elected deputy mayor of the council.A lawyer by profession, Reddy was born and raised in Hyderabad, where she also pursued her education before moving to Australia in 2005. She has been living in the country ever since.Members of the Indian community in Australia hailed her achievement, describing it as both “symbolic and significant” for the country’s multicultural communities.
