Vadodara: When he received his power bill message from the MGVCL on his phone, Nayan Patel, a resident of Sama, was shocked. His outstanding power bill amounted to Rs 7.81 lakh! Patel, who has the new smart meter installed at his residence, couldn’t believe his eyes.“The last power bill I paid four months ago was Rs 1,721. In April, the smart meter was installed, following which we were yet to receive the bill. When I saw such a huge amount in the message, I panicked,” Patel, who is into tax consultancy, told TOI. He logged in to the MGVCL website to check the bill amount, and there too it showed the same amount.“I called the MGVCL customer care helpline and registered my complaint. They said that they will check the details and asked me to submit a formal application. Later, I got a call from the Sama office of MGVCL, and I was assured that the power bill amount is much less. But I am yet to get an official message about the correct bill amount on my phone,” Patel said.“When they were installing smart meters at our home, we raised this issue as such errors in billing were reported in other areas of the city in the past,” Patel added.
