Bokaro: India’s defence manufacturing received a major boost as Steel Authority of India Ltd supplied indigenous special steel for the stealth frigate INS Taragiri, commissioned into the Indian Navy on April 3, 2026.Built using indigenous steel from SAIL, the warship stands as a symbol of the country’s growing strategic strength and confidence. Constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, the advanced frigate incorporates nearly 4,000 tonnes of special-grade steel plates produced at SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela plants.
Among them, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) played a pivotal role, supplying a significant share and showcasing its robust production capabilities and quality standards, said a BSL official.“This is not the first time Bokaro has contributed to the nation’s defence. Earlier, BSL also supplied special steel for warships such as INS Vikrant, INS Vindhyagiri, INS Nilgiri and INS Surat,” said Manikant Dhan, BSL, chief of communication.
