Bathinda: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has asked its functionaries and workers to provide wheat, chaff and green fodder to farmers whose crops were damaged following the recent unseasonal rain and hail. The party has called a meeting of constituency in-charges and district presidents in Chandigarh on Wednesday to finalise the modality of the exercise, said SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal after a rally at Budhlada on Tuesday. Sukhbir said, “Just like the devastating floods last year when the SAD came to the rescue of farmers by distributing fodder, seed and medicines after they were abandoned by the Aam Aadmi Party govt, I urge party leaders and workers to reach out to the affected farmers and extend help to them.” Taking on chief minister Bhagwant Mann, Sukhbir said he had forsaken the farmers as they were yet to get compensation for damage to their paddy crop in the last year’s floods. “Now even after unseasonal rain and hailstorms have flattened wheat crop across 1.25 lakh acres, they have not been given any immediate compensation despite the AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal making claims in Gujarat that Punjab’s AAP govt had given compensation at the rate of Rs 50,000 per acre to Punjab farmers within one month of the floods last year.” Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal and senior party leader Balwinder Singh Bhunder also accused the AAP govt of repeatedly failing to give compensation to the farmers.
