Times News NetworkNew Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday detailed how the Rs 22,236-crore green budget for 2026-27 will be deployed on the ground, outlining department-wise allocations and interventions aimed at tackling pollution and improving environmental infrastructure across the capital.At the core of the plan is the Yamuna clean-up, which has been allocated the largest share of Rs 6,485 crore. The Delhi Jal Board will use the funds to build new sewage treatment plants, upgrade existing facilities, intercept major drains and improve riverfront stretches.Officials said the focus will be on reducing the flow of untreated sewage into the river and enhancing overall wastewater management capacity.The transport sector is the second major focus area, with Rs 4,758 crore earmarked to scale up electric buses, expand charging infrastructure and strengthen last-mile connectivity. The move is aimed at curbing emissions, a key contributor to air pollution, while also improving the reliability of public transport.Officials said that govt is ramping up investment in public transport, with a target to expand the bus fleet to 13,760 by 2028-29, prioritising electric buses. Integration of the metro and RRTS networks with feeder buses, e-autos and shared mobility services is expected to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce dependence on private vehicles.To accelerate electric mobility, 32,000 EV charging points will be installed over the next four years, she said.To tackle dust pollution, Public Works Department has been allocated Rs 3,350 crore for measures such as mechanised road sweeping, deployment of anti-smog solutions and development of greener road infrastructure. This is expected to target construction dust and road dust, which account for a significant share of particulate pollution.Govt has also laid emphasis on coordinated planning, with Rs 2,350 crore allocated to the planning department to design, monitor and streamline green projects.Urban development agencies, along with Dusib, will receive Rs 2,273 crore for interventions including waste management, sanitation improvements and creation of urban green spaces.In the energy sector, Rs 1,410 crore has been earmarked for promoting solar power and other renewable sources. The environment department will utilise Rs 558 crore for pollution control programmes, while Rs 305 crore has been set aside for irrigation and flood control projects focusing on water conservation and drainage improvement.Other allocations include Rs 258 crore for promoting green growth in rural areas, Rs 181 crore for afforestation and wildlife conservation, and Rs 102 crore for eco-friendly tourism initiatives. Several villages lack dedicated playgrounds and parks for children, which will be developed.The education sector will see Rs 100 crore used for green initiatives in schools, while smaller outlays have been made for curbing industrial pollution, improving environmental standards in hospitals and strengthening disaster management systems.Officials said a key feature of the plan is the creation of a green fund, which will support multiple departments and ensure flexibility in funding priority projects. All departments have also been asked to map their expenditures against green objectives, a move aimed at ensuring accountability and measurable outcomes.
