Thiruvananthapuram: The move to inaugurate a building meant for University Institute of Technology (UIT) in Sasthamkotta, without the permission of Kerala University (KU) vice-chancellor (VC) and syndicate, kicked up a row.KU VC Mohanan Kunnummal is learned to have given directions preventing the move to inaugurate the building, which is under construction. Kovur Kunjumon, MLA, is supposed to open the building in the presence of syndicate member G Muraleedharan on Friday. However, the university came to know about the move only on Wednesday, when UIT principal informed university registrar about the inauguration. The construction on university land was funded by MLA’s asset development fund. Work on the building, which began in 2020, remains unfinished.Upon learning about the event from registrar, VC instructed the principal to postpone the inauguration. Starting university centres and organising inaugurations require syndicate’s consent. Conducting the event without the VC’s or syndicate’s approval is against regulations.Following the university’s directive, the principal called a staff meeting and reportedly decided, based on syndicate member’s suggestion, to proceed with the inauguration as planned, it is learned.
