Kolkata: The high demand for roses in the run-up to Valentine’s Day has doubled the prices of the flower. While the price of Bangalore roses shot up from Rs 40 to Rs 80-100 per piece, the price of local varieties also went up from Rs 15 to Rs 30 per piece.Nanda Gopal Maity, who works in a flower shop at New Market, has stocked about 2,500 local red roses of the ‘mainauperle’ variety and about 500 export-quality roses from Bangalore. At Panskura, about 10,000 rose farmers attached to 2,000 nurseries, grew the mainauperle variety and delivered stocks to flower sellers in Delhi and Howrah’s Mullick’s Ghat. The demand for rose bouquets has also increased due to the ongoing wedding season. “Last Saturday, due to Rose Day, the sale was unexpectedly high,” said Subrata Jana, another flower seller at New Market. Uttam Maity, who works at Luna Nursery, was a bit sceptical about the demand on V-Day due to the ongoing exams. Krishna Chandra Mondal of Maishora, said, “The yield of red rose was good .” (Inputs from Biplab Bhattacharjee)
