Artificial Intelligence (AI) is radically changing the very essence of management itself. This technology is not only restricted to automating mundane activities or making processes efficient. AI now informs strategic choices, influences pricing decisions, accelerates innovation, reshapes customer engagement, and increasingly supports leadership decision-making. Against this backdrop, the question before business schools is no longer whether AI belongs in the curriculum. The more important question is how management education itself must evolve for an economy where humans and intelligent machines will work side by side.

For decades, management education derived its value from giving students access to knowledge. Frameworks, analytical models and decision-making tools formed the backbone of the MBA. Today, however, knowledge itself has become widely accessible. Generative AI can analyse financial statements, develop marketing strategies, synthesise research, write code, or build functional prototypes within minutes. What AI in the near future may not be able to substitute for is human judgement, judgment that consists of posing the right question, understanding the context, evaluating different viewpoints, dealing with ambiguity, using ethics, and taking ownership of one’s decisions. As AI becomes more capable, these distinctly human capabilities become even more valuable.This calls for a new MBA playbook.

From knowledge acquisition to human judgement

At Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, we have embraced what we describe as an AI-first approach to management education. Instead of treating AI as another specialised subject or elective, we are redesigning learning experiences across disciplines with AI embedded into the learning process. The emphasis has shifted from teaching students what to know towards helping them learn how to think, question, evaluate and decide in partnership with intelligent systems.

That philosophy is reflected in the classroom. Students use AI tools to solve live business problems, participate in simulations that mirror executive decision-making, build working prototypes using no-code and low-code platforms, and defend their recommendations through presentations, structured discussions and AI-assisted assessments. AI contributes to the process, but accountability remains firmly with the learner. The goal is not merely to produce graduates who know how to use AI tools, but leaders who can question AI-generated insights, recognise their limitations, and apply them responsibly to create business value.

Building AI-ready classrooms and faculty

It also demands a shift in how we teach. Traditional lectures have to be replaced by experiential settings in which students get to explore, construct, test, fail, iterate, and learn. Thus, experiential learning becomes a core component of the MBA program. Simulations, data-backed consultancy projects, AI-enabled capstone projects, innovation labs, and cross-disciplinary thinking push students to put concepts into action instead of just knowing them.

The transformation cannot stop with students. Faculty members must evolve just as quickly. Investing in faculty capability has become as important as investing in digital infrastructure. The faculty regularly participates in AI hackathons, experiments with generative and agentic AI systems, builds AI assistants for their classrooms, and uses them in class discussion sessions. When educators themselves become active users and builders of AI-enabled solutions, they model the habits of curiosity and continuous learning that tomorrow’s leaders need.

Assessment, too, deserves a fundamental rethink. Conventional examinations were designed for a world where memorising and reproducing information mattered. In an AI-rich environment, generating answers has become relatively easy; demonstrating reasoning has become far more important. Evaluation must therefore move beyond written submissions to include problem framing, reflection, viva voce examinations, critical discussion, and the ability to justify decisions under uncertainty. AI can support this process by helping faculty design more creative assessments, but it cannot replace the educator’s role in evaluating the quality of thinking.

The MBA of the future must remain human-centred

Perhaps the most important lesson from this transition is that technology should never become the centre of education. Students do not need yet another course on AI software. They need an education that prepares them to lead organisations where technology will continue to evolve faster than any curriculum can. The enduring capabilities of effective managers will remain curiosity, sound judgement, empathy, ethical leadership, systems thinking, adaptability and the ability to make informed decisions amidst uncertainty.

The MBA of the future, therefore, cannot merely be AI-enabled; it must remain fundamentally human-centred. As India strengthens its position as a global innovation and knowledge economy, business schools have both an opportunity and a responsibility to redefine what management education should look like for the next generation. The leaders of tomorrow will not be distinguished by how effectively they compete against AI, but by how intelligently they collaborate with it.

In the AI economy, competitive advantage will belong not to those who know the most, but to those who think the best. Preparing leaders for that future is the defining responsibility of management education today.
