Chandigarh: A retired Brigadier was allegedly duped of ₹3.2 lakh after cyber fraudsters posing as gas service representatives hacked his mobile phone and siphoned money from his bank account.Following a complaint by Brigadier Bhup Singh Taunque (retd), a resident of Army Flats in Sector 47-C, the cyber police station in Sector 17 registered a cheating case against unknown suspects and initiated an investigation. No arrests have been made so far.According to the complaint, Taunque received a mobile message on June 20 warning that his gas connection would be disconnected at 10.30 pm unless outstanding dues were cleared. Shortly after, an unknown caller instructed him to install an Adani application in APK format on his phone.The following day, the fraudsters attempted to transfer ₹5 lakh from the victim’s SBI pension account at the Sector 17 Bank Square branch, but the transaction was declined by the victim and blocked by the bank.However, after his phone was compromised, the fraudsters executed four unauthorised withdrawals from his Axis Bank account on July 5 within 42 minutes. The fraudulent transactions totaled ₹3,26,374—comprising transfers of ₹90,000, ₹1,03,551, ₹48,323, and ₹84,500. Cyber police are currently tracing the transaction trails to identify the culprits.
