Gurdaspur: The family members of 19-year-old Ranjit Singh, who was killed in a police encounter for the Feb 22 murder of two policemen, held a protest in Gurdaspur on Sunday, seeking justice for the slain youth. However, the dharna was lifted later on.Kin of two other accused, Dilawar Singh and Inderjit Singh, in the case also joined the protest, along with several political, social activists and farmer leaders.Notably, two policemen were found shot dead at a police post in Gurdaspur on the morning of Feb 22. Three days later, Ranjit Singh was killed in a police encounter near Puranashala village, about 8 km from Gurdaspur on the Gurdaspur-Mukerian road, on early Feb 25. The second accused, Dilawar Singh, 19, of Ali Nangal village, was arrested onFeb 24, while the third accused, Inderjit Singh, 21, was arrested from Amritsar on Feb 27.Ranjit Singh’s uncle, Harwinder Singh, told mediapersons that the family conveyed their willingness to meet the authorities after the protest. “We will hold discussions with the police and, thereafter, decide about the post-mortem examination. We have placed our demands before all concerned authorities,” he said.He confirmed that the dharna was lifted for now but insisted on a CBI inquiry or another high-level investigation into the encounter. “If anyone in the police is found guilty, strict action must be taken, including suspension,” he added.
