Ramgarh: The transport department has started surprise night checks on national highways passing through Ramgarh to curb illegal parking by heavy and goods vehicles and improve road safety.The drive was launched on the directive of deputy commissioner Rituraj. A transport department team carried out a late-night inspection on Saturday, targeting vehicles parked along roadsides and in no-parking zones on busy highway stretches.District transport officer Rajesh Ekka said the action was taken in view of the accident risk posed by heavy vehicles parked along highways at night.“Surprise checks were conducted at key locations on NH-33, including Chutupalu Valley, Patel Chowk, Kuju and other prominent stretches. Vehicles parked along roadsides and in no-parking zones were specially checked,” Ekka said.Officials inspected vehicle documents, including registration certificates, permits, fitness certificates, insurance papers, pollution certificates, driving licences and other mandatory papers. Drivers were also asked to follow road safety norms and use designated parking spaces.An official said 29 vehicles were checked during the drive. Action was taken against 12 vehicles found violating norms, and fines totalling Rs 2,42,500 were imposed.Ekka appealed to drivers and vehicle owners not to park heavy and goods vehicles on main roads or in no-parking zones at night. He said unauthorised roadside parking obstructs traffic and increases the risk of accidents, as motorists may fail to spot parked vehicles in time.Officials said such checking drives would continue and action would be taken against violators as per rules.
