Kanpur: An 18-year-old girl died after the courtyard floor of her house suddenly caved in, causing her to fall into a 25-foot-deep abandoned borewell in Purvamir village under the Maharajpur police station area of Kanpur early Friday. The incident occurred while Yashi was preparing for Raksha Bandhan rituals. Her elder sister tried to pull her out with a rope but failed as more soil caved in, pushing Yashi deeper into the borewell.Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and launched a rescue operation. A fire brigade team also arrived around 8am and was later joined by NDRF and SDRF personnel.Continuous rainfall hampered rescue efforts and made it difficult for the teams to reach the girl.Rescuers first used a JCB machine to demolish part of the verandah and dig a 20-ft-deep pit near the accident site in an attempt to reach her. When they were unable to locate her, a Poclain excavator was deployed to dig another 10-ft-deep pit. The teams finally reached Yashi at around 2.20pm.She was immediately rushed to CHC Sarsaul, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.Family members told police that the abandoned borewell, which had failed to yield water, had been covered with flooring in the courtyard. They said continuous rainfall had weakened the ground, leading to the collapse.
