Srinagar, Sep 3: A group of advocates from Rajwar held a silent protest at Mian Chowk on Thursday, expressing strong resentment over the poor condition of the Handwara-Rajwar road.
The protesters said the road has remained neglected for years despite repeated assurances from elected representatives, officials and concerned departments. They said residents have continued to face serious difficulties due to the poor condition of the road, while promised development work has failed to take shape on the ground.
The advocates said the issue has continued across generations, with successive MLAs and officials making commitments to address the problem. However, they alleged that little has changed despite repeated assurances.
The protesters also questioned claims regarding budget allocations. They said MPs, MLAs and officials of the Roads and Buildings Division had given assurances over the past two years that funds would be made available for the road. Despite these assurances, they alleged that there has been no visible progress.
Speaking to reporters, Advocate Imran criticised local political leadership for focusing on social media posts and press statements instead of completing development work. He said people need action on the ground and not repeated political promises.
He said the deteriorated condition of the Rajwar road has created serious risks for commuters and described the stretch as a major safety hazard. The protesters demanded immediate intervention from the administration and the concerned authorities.
Another advocate, Javid Ahmad, also criticised the functioning of officials and urged the administration to follow established service rules while addressing public issues. He alleged that administrative machinery should work independently and focus on the needs of residents.
The advocates said Thursday’s silent protest was intended as a peaceful warning to the government and local authorities. They said they would continue to raise the issue if their demands remain unaddressed.
The protesters urged the administration to initiate work on the Handwara-Rajwar road at the earliest and provide residents with safe and reliable connectivity.
