Kanpur: Intermittent showers and overcast skies brought much-needed relief to Kanpur residents from the prevailing heat and humidity on Wednesday, a day after the city received evening rainfall. The rainfall led to a 1.6°C drop in the maximum temperature, which settled at 32°C, while the minimum temperature declined to 26.8°C. Despite the cooler weather, humidity remained high, with maximum relative humidity recorded at 88% and minimum humidity at 83%.Clouds dominated the sky throughout the day, with only brief spells of sunshine before being covered again. South-easterly winds blowing at speeds between 12.8 kmph and 19.4 kmph provided additional relief from the sultry conditions.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense cloud cover accompanied by light to moderate rain and thunderstorms is likely across the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours. Active monsoon conditions are expected to bring down temperatures further and gradually reduce humidity. The IMD has also forecast moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms across Kanpur division and several parts of Uttar Pradesh due to active monsoon systems and low-pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal and central India. For Kanpur district, the IMD has predicted a 65–70% probability of rainfall during the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 32°C, while the minimum may range between 26°C and 28°C.Weather scientist at Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Dr SN Sunil Pandey, said the Kanpur division is likely to witness cloudy skies and strong winds between July 9 and July 12 due to high atmospheric moisture and increased moisture inflow. He said light to moderate rain, gusty winds, thunderstorms, lightning and isolated drizzle are expected, although hot and humid conditions may return whenever sunshine reappears.Dr Pandey said rainfall during the past 24 hours was intermittent and brief, preventing weather observatories from recording significant precipitation. However, he estimated that the city received nearly 1 mm of rainfall during the period.
