Bhagalpur: The Railways on Tuesday launched recommissioned demineralised water plant (DMWP) at the loco shed on the Jamalpur Locomotive Workshop premises under Malda division of Eastern Railway.The DMWP, which had remained defunct since 2020, was recommissioned under the guidance of Manish Kumar Gupta, divisional railway manager (DRM), Malda division, and Rakesh Kumar, chief motive power engineer (Diesel and Disaster Management), Eastern Railway. The restoration work was carried out under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Das, senior divisional mechanical engineer (Diesel), Jamalpur Loco Shed.Demineralised (DM) water is used in the closed-circuit pressurised cooling systems of ALCO locomotive engines, such as WDM2 and WDM3A, to prevent scale buildup and metallic corrosion. Plain tap water contains minerals that get deposited in cylinder liners and radiators at high temperatures, an railway source said, adding that railways mandates the use of pure DM water along with corrosion inhibitors to protect engine components.The recommissioned DMWP is expected to ensure a reliable supply of high-quality DM water for the maintenance of ALCO locomotives. Free from dissolved salts, minerals and other impurities, DM water plays a vital role in the locomotive cooling system by preventing scale formation, corrosion and internal deposits, the DRM said.He said the use of DM water enhances cooling efficiency, improves the performance and service life of critical engine components, reduces maintenance requirements and increases overall locomotive reliability. He said the revival of the DMWP was necessitated by its crucial role in the performance of locomotive engines.The revival of the plant is expected to strengthen maintenance capabilities at Loco Shed in Jamalpur besides will reduce equipment downtime and improve the availability of locomotives for both passenger and freight services, he said adding the initiative was undertaken for modernizing maintenance infrastructure and adopting best engineering practices to ensure safe, reliable and efficient railway operations.
