New Delhi: With the monsoon season approaching, the Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated a series of drainage and waterlogging mitigation works across several vulnerable stretches of north Delhi, including University area, Roshnara Road, GT Road and Rajpur Road.According to official documents, the department is undertaking works aimed at improving stormwater drainage and ensuring quicker removal of rainwater from roads that have historically witnessed waterlogging during heavy showers.The project includes excavation of trenches for laying drainage infrastructure, construction of bell-mouth openings beneath footpaths to facilitate stormwater flow and restoration of excavated areas after the installation of pipes and related works. Sources said the interventions are intended to improve connectivity between roadside drains and the larger drainage network.The works will also involve traffic management arrangements during construction. Contractors have been directed to install traffic signals, reflective signs, glow lamps, caution tapes and other diversion measures to ensure the safety of commuters during both day and night operations.In another measure, the department has planned to deploy a dedicated sewerman at the pump house located near the railway underbridge (RUB) at Pul Prahladpur on MB Road. The location has witnessed recurring water accumulation during intense rainfall events, often disrupting vehicular movement. Officials said manpower deployment at the pump house will help ensure continuous operation of pumping systems and faster response during emergencies.The department is also focusing on desilting operations in north Delhi. A fresh tender has been floated for cleaning and removal of accumulated silt from drains running from Amrit Vihar to Shalimar Palace on Main Burari Road and Swaroop Nagar Road. PWD records indicate that large quantities of sand and silt deposited in the drains have reduced their carrying capacity, increasing the risk of overflow during monsoon rains.Sources said desilting and drainage improvement works are being prioritised ahead of the rainy season to minimise waterlogging incidents and maintain smooth traffic movement. The measures form part of the department’s annual monsoon action plan, under which vulnerable locations across the city are being identified and addressed before heavy rain begins.
