Chandigarh: The Punjab govt is going to roll out a ‘Students Absent Alert’ SMS system across all govt schools in the state to boost attendance and strengthen accountability. Under the initiative, parents will receive alerts whenever their child is absent.Details of the system were shared with 18 lakh parents during a statewide Mega Parent–Teacher Meeting (PTM) held across all govt primary, middle, high and senior secondary schools. The initiative is aimed at enhancing community participation and improving student learning outcomes.Divulging the details, education minister Harjot Singh Bains said the SMS system would be implemented across all govt schools to ensure regular attendance. He said parents were sensitised about the system through structured orientations and one-on-one discussions during the PTM.“The Mega PTM went beyond report card distribution, offering holistic feedback on each child’s progress. Schools created welcoming environments, showcased student work through exhibitions, and also focused on HPV vaccination for girls to promote adolescent health,” he said.Terming the Mega PTM a “critical step towards strengthening the state’s education ecosystem”, the minister said all govt schools dedicated the entire day to parent-teacher-student interactions, transforming classrooms into collaborative spaces focused on meaningful dialogue rather than routine academic activity, with the aim of building a more responsive and inclusive public education system.
