New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday called for stronger public examination systems, saying the government is undertaking comprehensive measures to curb unfair means and make exams more transparent, secure and trustworthy for students.
Addressing the nation on the eve of Independence Day, Murmu said public examinations are “gateways to the opportunities” available to students and stressed the need to protect their credibility.
“The Government is undertaking comprehensive steps to reform these examinations,” the President said. The objective, she added, is to completely curb the use of unfair means in public examinations and make the system “more transparent, more secure, and more trustworthy for the youth”.
The remarks come as examination integrity has emerged as a major concern for India’s education system, with the credibility and security of high-stakes examinations directly affecting students’ access to higher education and other opportunities.
However, the President did not announce any new examination policy, specific reform mechanism or implementation timeline in the address. Her comments indicate that examination reform and restoring trust in public examinations remain part of the government’s broader agenda for students and youth.
Murmu also placed the examination issue within a wider discussion on India’s young population. She said 65% of India’s population is below the age of 35, describing the country’s youth as its “most valuable asset”.
She said young Indians are increasingly contributing to innovation and job creation, including through self-employment and entrepreneurship. The President also cited young people’s development of innovative and practical solutions to grassroots challenges as evidence of their contribution to nation-building.
“Our students are the architects of India’s future,” Murmu said, calling for the government and society to work together to safeguard the present and future of students.
She said new opportunities are emerging for young people through government initiatives and economic activity, and encouraged them to explore new paths to success.
The President also highlighted the role of young Indians in India’s expanding innovation ecosystem, referring to a recent successful rocket launch led by a team with an average age of 28. She said such examples reflected the talent and commitment of India’s youth.
Her comments on examination reform came as part of a broader address focused on India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat by 2047, with youth development, innovation and economic opportunity forming key elements of that vision.
