Kanpur: The body of a four-month-pregnant Dalit woman was found in an orchard in the Ghatampur area of Kanpur on Thursday, with police suspecting that she died after consuming a poisonous substance. Her family members identified the body and accused her lover of killing her and dumping it in the orchard.Rajendra Sonkar, a resident of Patara in Ghatampur, said his elder daughter, Renu, 25, had left home four months ago with her lover without informing the family. He said the couple had a dispute, and when Renu returned home one month ago, she was three months pregnant. She then left home again with another man, he added.Police began the investigation with the help of a mobile phone recovered near the woman.Ghatampur station in-charge Manoj Singh Bhadauria said family members were not yet able to provide the names or identities of Renu’s first and second lovers. He said the mobile phone has been taken into possession and its call details are being examined. ACP Ghatampur Krishnakant Yadav said, “A thorough investigation into all other aspects of the case is underway. Further legal action will be taken based on the postmortem report.”
