Prayagraj: In a push to strengthen drinking water supply and support water conservation in the extended municipal area of the Naini area, a new 81 MLD water treatment plant (WTP) will be constructed at Arail. The project, to be executed by Jal Nigam Urban, is expected to improve water supply in newly added areas of the city and benefit around 3 lakh locals.Officials said the plant would be built on over two hectares of land adjacent to the sewage treatment plant in Arail. The Jalkal department has released the budget for the project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 273 crore. The plant is expected to be completed within seven months.Along with this, around 450 km of drinking water pipeline will be laid to ensure supply to the extended urban areas. The project is expected to provide drinking water to more than 37,000 households in 10 newly created wards of the city. Officials said the upcoming facility would be the second major water treatment plant in the city. The project assumes significance in view of the recent expansion of Prayagraj’s urban limits. As many as 92 gram sabhas have been merged into the municipal corporation, leading to the creation of 20 new wards. The Naini-side WTP is being developed specifically to cater to water supply needs in the expanded urban area, where demand for basic civic amenities has increased sharply.General manager of the Jalkal department, Sanjeev Kumar, said work on the water treatment plant in the extended Naini area was progressing rapidly and that water supply from the facility would begin once construction was completed.
