Prayagraj: In a major push to strengthen postal and parcel handling at Prayagraj Junction ahead of the Magh Mela, the new two-storey Railway Mail Service (RMS) building on the Civil Lines side is ready and is likely to be handed over by Dec. The facility is expected to become operational before the major congregation, allowing mail services to function from the Civil Lines side while easing pressure on the busy city side of the junction.The high-tech RMS building has been constructed adjacent to the main station building at the eastern end of Prayagraj Junction (Civil Lines side). Preparations for starting operations from the new facility have begun.The building has direct connectivity with Nawab Yusuf road, which will provide easier access for the movement of postal consignments, parcels and other mail-related material.The shifting of RMS operations is particularly significant in view of the Magh Mela, when Prayagraj witnesses a substantial increase in passenger movement as well as postal and parcel traffic. Officials are preparing to make the Civil Lines-side infrastructure fully functional before the mela so that the additional load can be handled without disruption.The new facility is also expected to improve the speed and efficiency of mail and parcel handling. Its better connectivity will allow postal consignments to be moved more conveniently while reducing dependence on the congested city-side approach of the station.Once the new RMS building becomes fully operational, the old RMS facility on the city side, towards GT road, will be demolished. The land occupied by the existing building will subsequently be utilized for construction of a new facility on the city side.The relocation will thus serve a dual purpose — improving RMS capacity and reducing congestion around the city side of Prayagraj Junction. With preparations for the Magh Mela already gathering pace, authorities are now working to activate the Civil Lines-side facility at the earliest.
