Patna: A police van driver died and three police personnel were injured after a vehicle from Piprahi police station in Sheohar district met with an accident on Saturday. The vehicle crashed into a roadside tree while its driver was allegedly trying to save a pedestrian who suddenly came in front of it.On receiving information, a police team reached the spot and, with the help of local residents, took the injured to Piprahi primary health centre. They were later referred to Sarojini Sitaram Sadar Hospital in Sheohar.According to police sources, the vehicle was being driven by chowkidar Ramji Rai, 50, son of Bawan Rai, in the absence of a regular driver. The accident occurred near Singarhiya village when Rai allegedly swerved to avoid a pedestrian who appeared in front of the vehicle. The jeep went out of control and hit a roadside tree.Doctors at Sarojini Sitaram Sadar Hospital declared Rai dead on arrival. Sub-inspector Ashok Singh and two other policemen are undergoing treatment. Some of the injured are being considered for referral to Muzaffarpur for further medical care.Following the accident, Sheohar SP Shailendra Kumar Singh and Sadar SDPO Anushil Kumar, along with other senior officers, reached the hospital and took stock of the condition of the injured. They also met the family members of the deceased chowkidar.The SP said the accident occurred while the driver was trying to save a pedestrian, following which the vehicle went out of control and hit a tree. He said necessary legal and departmental action, including steps related to compensation for the deceased’s family, was being taken.
