Shivamogga: A 35-year-old was shot in the leg by city police early Thursday morning, after he allegedly murdered his grandmother for objecting to his drug-peddling activities and attacked the arresting officers. The deceased has been identified as Susheelamma, 65, a resident of Manjunatha Layout behind the city bus stand. The accused, her grandson Kishore, has a criminal record, police said.According to police sources, the confrontation began on Wednesday evening when Kishore brought a group of associates to Susheelamma’s house to pack marijuana in smaller packets. When Susheelamma objected to the illegal activity inside her home, a heated argument ensued. Susheelamma left the house to lodge a formal complaint at Doddapete police station.Enraged by her move, Kishore pursued her on a motorcycle, intentionally ramming her from behind. After she fell, Kishore picked up a boulder from the roadside and smashed her head, killing her on the spot before fleeing the scene, police said. Investigation revealed that just two days ago, Kishore had severely assaulted his wife, forcing her to seek medical treatment and return to her parental home, police said.Following the murder, Shivamogga police launched a manhunt. Acting on information that the accused was hiding in Vajpayee Layout under Tunga Nagar police limits, a team led by Doddapete police inspector Y Satyanarayan cornered him in the wee hours of Thursday.When the team moved in to make the arrest, Kishore resisted violently, wielding a machete and attacking constable Ganesh. Despite repeated warnings and a warning shot fired into the air, the accused refused to surrender. After which, inspector Satyanarayan shot Kishore in his left leg to neutralise the threat, Shivamogga SP B Nikhil told reporters.Kishore was immediately apprehended and rushed to McGann District Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment under tight security in the prison ward. The injured constable, Ganesh, was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. Following the early morning operation, SP visited both the crime scene and McGann Hospital to assess the situation. Doddapete police have registered cases regarding both, the murder and the subsequent attack on law enforcement.
