T’puram: A police officer was seriously injured after a youth allegedly attacked him with a helmet while police were dispersing a crowd following conclusion of the weeklong Onam celebrations in the city on Sunday night.Sreejith, a CPO attached to Special Armed Police (SAP) Camp, sustained injuries to his head in the attack. He was taken to MCH, where he received six stitches.Museum Police arrested Akhil Krishnadev, 27, of Aryanad, in connection with the incident.The incident occurred after the formal conclusion of the Onam celebrations at Kanakakunnu Palace. The police had asked the visitors to leave the premises around 10pm. While the crowd dispersed from the Palace premises, a large number of people later gathered at Manaveeyam Veedhi instead of returning home.As the gathering continued, personnel from Museum Police and SAP Camp were deployed to disperse the crowd. The police officials said the crowd initially refused to leave, following which personnel used force to clear the area.According to the police, Krishnadev, who had left the area, later returned to the spot carrying a helmet. He allegedly approached Sreejith and struck him on the head with the helmet, leaving the officer seriously injured. The incident triggered further intervention by police personnel.Krishnadev was subsequently taken into custody by the police. He was also admitted to the MCH after sustaining injuries.
