Patna: Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has prepared an initial conceptual plan to transform three underused parts of the city into better organised public and green spaces, with improved facilities for pedestrians, cyclists, visitors and small businesses. The proposal under the ‘Urban Green Infrastructure’ project covers the outer and inner periphery of Gandhi Maidan, the Patel Golambar-Sheikhpura Mor route via the airport and the space beneath the Mithapur-Karbighiya flyover. At Gandhi Maidan, the outer perimeter is envisaged as a more organised public zone with wider footpaths, greenery, seating spaces and improved lighting. The conceptual plan also includes designated vending kiosks for tea, snacks, fast food, fruits and other refreshments. These kiosks would follow a common design so that vendors can operate from identified locations instead of setting up stalls randomly along the roadside. The plan also proposes organised auto stands near the gates of Gandhi Maidan.Waste management has also been incorporated into the proposed design, with separate bins for wet, dry and recyclable waste. Benches, landscaped pockets and adequate lighting are planned to make the area more comfortable for people using the space. The inner perimeter of Gandhi Maidan has been given a separate treatment in the concept, with pedestrian pathways, additional greenery and seating areas. Bicycle tracks are also proposed at some stretches. The aim is to make the areas around the ground more usable for walking, sitting and cycling instead of allowing them to function primarily as spaces for vehicular movement.A PMC official said the conceptual plan, which is in the initial stage, is currently only an idea to beautify underutilised spaces and improve their public use. “It is simply an idea of how we can develop these spaces and make them more public-friendly. The concept plan has been developed by the project implementation unit at PMC headquarters to show what such spaces could look like. The detailed plan and implementation agency will be decided at a later stage, after approval from the councilors,” the official said. The Patel Golambar to Sheikhpura Mor stretch through the airport route is proposed as a green infrastructure corridor. The concept includes improved footpaths, dedicated cycling tracks and greenery along both sides of the road, along with roadside plantations and landscaped dividers. Yellow tactile strips on the footpaths have been proposed to make pedestrian movement easier for visually impaired people. The third location identified for improvement is the space beneath the Mithapur-Karbighia flyover. The concept proposes landscaped areas between the flyover pillars, along with plants, walking paths, seating spaces, play zone for kids, outdoor sports activities and improved lighting. Tactile pedestrian paths and separate bins for different categories of waste have also been included.
