Ranchi: The worn-out zebra crossings across Ranchi are raising safety concerns among pedestrians and motorists. The markings have become barely visible, especially in low-light, making it difficult for both walkers and motorists to recognise designated crossing zones. Faded or missing road markings at key intersections are forcing pedestrians to navigate busy roads without clear guidance, while drivers risk fines for unwittingly crossing invisible stop lines.Residents said that many zebra crossings, especially in high-traffic areas like Lalpur Chowk, Kutchery Chowk, Kanke Road, and Upper Bazar area, have become nearly indistinct due to wear and neglect. “Walking on Ranchi roads is a very challenging affair. While a large portion of the city lacks footpaths, the absence or unrecognizable zebra crossing at the intersections are adding to the woes. Whenever the pedestrians have to cross a road, they are left to risk their lives passing in front of speeding vehicles. People often do not stop their vehicles even if they can see a pedestrian crossing the road. Disappearing zebra crossings added to the peril,” said Subodh Kumar, a pedestrian at Lalpur area.Another pedestrian, Ashok Kumar, said, “Vehicle users must be sensitive to pedestrians and give them the passage to smoothly cross the roads. Also, the authorities must repaint the zebra stripes time to time to facilitate a smooth movement.”Motorists have also raised concerns, fearing they might be penalised for unintentionally violating traffic rules due to the disappearing markings. Uncertain about where to stop, the motorists are leading to potential traffic violations and accidents on roads.“Sometimes you can’t even tell there’s a zebra crossing until you’re already over it. The problem worsens during the night. Without clear and visible markings, drivers may not notice a crossing until it’s too late, potentially leading to accidents. The danger can discourage people from walking on busy streets and contribute to increased vehicle usage,” a motorist, Ravi Agarwal, said.Ranchi SP (Traffic) Kailash Karmali said, “I have written to the Ranchi Municipal Corporation around a month back to repaint the zebra crossings across the city. The municipal corporation is repainting the stripes. As soon as it completes, it will facilitate a better commuting experience both for the pedestrians and the motorists.”
