Chennai: The residents of 13 villages in Kancheepuram district, who must part with agricultural fields to make way for Parandur greenfield airport, will receive 35 lakh to 60 lakh per acre of their land. They will also have the option to choose their entitlements, ranging from jobs to housing to monetary compensation, as part of the rehabilitation and resettlement plan. State govt issued two orders in this regard. For 1,960.64 acres of wet and dry land, where the guideline value falls between 5 lakh and 17 lakh per acre, the compensation ranges from 35 lakh to 60 lakh at a flat rate. For 374.53 acres of land where the private negotiation value exceeds the flat rate, the Kancheepuram collector is authorised to determine the compensation through negotiation. For instance, one acre in Nelvoy village is fixed at 73.85 lakh through private negotiation. This is the first comprehensive rehabilitation and resettlement plan from the state govt ever since Parandur was chosen to set up the second airport for Chennai. While the second GO addresses entitlements the displaced families are eligible for, the Parandur protest group held a meeting with villagers on Sunday after the release of the order to decide their further course of action.
