Daltonganj: Palamu deputy commissioner Dilip Pratap Singh Shekhawat, designated chairperson of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Awasiya Vidyalayas, made a surprise visit to the Sadar KGBAV in Daltonganj late Saturday and found the cooked lentil watery.District education officer Sandip Kumar said, “As soon as the DC found the cooked lentil watery and poor in quality, the warden was directed to improve the quality of food being served to the girls.”Sadar KGBAV has no full-time teacher for language or mathematics, with contract teachers taking classes.The visit alerted authorities of 11 other KGBAVs in the district against compromising food quality.Officials said low attendance was chronic. On Saturday, only 319 girls were present against an admitted strength of 479. An official said average absenteeism exceeds 30%.Guardian of an absentee girl said, “It’s time to carry out agricultural work and my daughter helps her mother to cultivate maize.”The DEO said, “Under the DC’s orders, wardens of 12 KGBAVs have been instructed to ensure classes are held properly and students have a safe and secure environment to live and study.”
