MP schools report 8.6 lakh drop in enrolment; notices issued to 10 districts

Madhya Pradesh’s school education department has reported a significant decline in student enrolment, with a staggering loss of over 8.6 lakh students in just one academic year. According to data from the unified district information system for education (UDISE), enrolment dropped from 1,42,31,833 in the 2025-26 academic year to 1,33,65,225 by October 13, 2026, marking a decrease of approximately 6%. This decline has prompted the department to issue show-cause notices to district project coordinators (DPCs) in about ten districts where enrolment figures were particularly low.Bhopal is a focal point in this alarming trend, having recorded a fall of 20,347 students compared to the previous year. The significant drop in enrolment raises concerns about potential lapses in data management and student attendance rather than an actual loss of students. The state’s education officials have expressed worries that the reported figure may indicate subpar digital record-keeping practices.

In addition to the overall decline, the Madhya Pradesh education department flagged serious lapses regarding the updating of student and teacher profiles on the UDISE portal. Officials noted that the ongoing “Aadhaar at School” campaign to verify student identities through Aadhaar numbers remains incomplete. Currently, only 80.62% of students from nursery through class 12 have been verified.

Harjinder Singh, the director of the state education centre, has responded to this situation by issuing notices to district project coordinators in several districts. These districts include Mauganj, Rewa, Vidisha, Maihar, Ratlam, Morena, Dhar, Barwani, Satna, and Ashoknagar. The DPCs have been asked to account for the shortfall in enrolment figures and accelerate the completion of pending record-verification tasks.

The education department’s actions emphasize the urgency of addressing both the decline in student numbers and the reliability of data maintenance. The response from district officials will be crucial in determining whether the decrease in enrolment is genuine or a reflection of deficiencies in the education system’s record-keeping and verification processes.

The significant drop in student numbers does not merely reflect academic challenges; it indicates broader concerns about the education system in Madhya Pradesh. The coming months will be pivotal for education officials to take remedial action and reinstate confidence in the state’s educational integrity and record-keeping mechanisms. The issues facing Madhya Pradesh schools serve as an important reminder of the ongoing challenges in maintaining high standards of education and ensuring the effective management of student information.
