Nagpur: The Nagpur traffic police took action against about 4,000 violators on March 2 and 3. This clampdown helped police keep road accidents and fatalities under check.The special drive, conducted under the direct supervision of CP Ravinder Singal, JtCP Navinchandra Reddy, and DCP (traffic) Lohit Matani, targeted reckless behaviour that typically spikes during the festival, including drunk driving, helmetless rides, triple-seat riding, and wrong-side driving.Official data revealed that the police booked around 4,000 offenders across 12 zones including 205 for drunk driving, 160 heavy vehicle violations, 189 triple-seat riding, 82 wrong-side driving, 40 rash driving cases under Section 281 of the BNS, and 3,245 for various other violations.Zone-wise, Sonegaon recorded the highest “other” challans at 517, followed by Ajni (546) and Lakadganj (498). Pardi topped drunk driving cases with 30, while Lakadganj reported 29 rash-driving offences.Sonegaon also led in wrong-side violations with 34 cases. MIDC, Sitabuldi, Sadar, Cotton Market, Indora, Sakkardara, Kamptee and Kalamna zones contributed to the overall numbers tally.DCP (traffic) Matani stated that the drive was launched after intelligence indicated heavy movement of vehicles carrying colours, water, and revellers. Extra pickets, CCTV monitoring, and motorcycle patrols were deployed at identified hotspots. CP Ravinder Singal and JtCP Reddy reviewed zone-wise performance to ensure zero tolerance.“Triple-seat riding and rash driving, which are very common during Holi, were strictly penalised. No major accidents during the two days was due to the swift action,” said Matani.
