Aizawl: Mizoram is sheltering a total of 38,213 refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur, home minister K Sapdanga informed the assembly on Thursday.In a written reply to leader of opposition Lalchhandama Ralte, Sapdanga said the figure was of August 20, comprising of 29,575 refugees from Myanmar, 1,679 from Bangladesh and 6,959 IDPs from Manipur.He said biometric enrolment had been completed for all refugees from Bangladesh, while 98.90% of those from Myanmar had been covered. The enrolment process began in late July 2025, following directions from the Union ministry of home affairs.Sapdanga said the previous Mizo National Front govt had declined to undertake the biometric exercise, citing various reasons, while the present Zoram People’s Movement govt initiated it.Expenditure on these measures has so far exceeded Rs 2.85 crore, he said.
