Srinagar, Sep 30: Jammu and Kashmir has filed 1,520 food safety cases and imposed fines of Rs 2.34 crore during 2025-26 and 2026-27, according to district-wise Food Safety Enforcement and Surveillance data placed before the Legislative Assembly.

During the two-year period, the Food Safety Department conducted 30,465 inspections, collecting 11,995 enforcement samples and 5,588 surveillance samples. As many as 1,049 samples were found non-conforming, the data shows.

The department filed 1,211 cases in 2025-26 and another 309 cases in 2026-27. Courts decided 2,596 cases during the two periods, with fines totaling Rs 2,34,06,500.

In 2025-26 alone, 21,120 inspections were conducted, with 7,001 enforcement and 3,443 surveillance samples collected. 690 samples were found non-conforming, while 1,211 cases were filed and 1,721 decided. Fines of Rs 1.71 crore were imposed.

In 2026-27, the department conducted 9,345 inspections, collected 4,994 enforcement and 2,145 surveillance samples, and found 359 samples non-conforming. 309 cases were filed, while 875 cases were decided, attracting fines of Rs 63.24 lakh.

The Health and Medical Education Department said multiple cases relating to food adulteration and sale or supply of unsafe or substandard meat were filed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and rules/regulations framed thereunder.
