Kanpur: Traffic police issued 10,108 challans during a special drive under the road safety campaign in Jan.After a review meeting of the road safety committee chaired by DM Jitendra Pratap Singh, officials said the challans included 6,297 for overspeeding, 1,307 for no parking, 996 for not wearing helmets and 938 for driving in the opposite direction. Earlier, 2,267 challans were issued in Nov, 2025 and 3,202 in Dec, 2025.
Alongside enforcement, accident figures showed a decline. The number of accidents fell from 57 in Dec 2024 to 37 in Dec 2025. In Jan, accidents reduced from 37 in 2025 to 24 in 2026. Fatalities dropped from 26 to 17, while the number of injured decreased from 23 to 9.To strengthen enforcement, 20 special teams were formed along critical corridors across 18 police station areas, including Maharajpur, Chakeri, Naubasta, Govindnagar, Gujaini, Barra, Hanuman Vihar, Panki, Sachendi, Bithoor, Shivrajpur, Chaubeypur, Bilhaur, Araul, Bidhanu, Saadh, Ghatampur and Sajeti. Two teams each were deployed from Chaubeypur and Ghatampur, with each team led by a sub-inspector and four constables.The teams were equipped with speed laser guns, body-worn cameras, decibel meters, breath analysers, reflective jackets, search lights, loud hailers, first aid kits and stretchers to ensure enforcement as well as quick emergency assistance.During the meeting, the district magistrate also sought a list of dug-up roads from the Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation and National Highways authorities. Expressing displeasure over road cutting by Jal Nigam/Jalkal on the stretch from Rawatpur crossing to Double Culvert, he directed officials to send a proposal to the government for action against those responsible.Taking note of the absence of the municipal corporation’s chief engineer and the chief medical officer, the DM said the presence of responsible officers would be mandatory in important meetings. He also directed officials to widely publicise the PM Relief scheme for treatment in the golden hour, the Rahveer scheme and cashless treatment facilities for accident victims.
